Covid-19 Information: Stay Updates – The New York Occasions

Covid-19 Live Updates and Tracker

Almost all of the buildings remained open, although six were temporarily closed, according to city guidelines that only schools that report at least two cases in different classrooms will be closed.

The cases occurred between September 8, when teachers and staff reported to the schools, and Monday, when the first students entered the classrooms.

In dozens of cases, the infected people received the positive test results and failed to show up for work, the department said. Others contacted the school and their close contacts in the buildings were ordered to quarantine for two weeks.

Avery Cohen, a spokeswoman for Mayor Bill de Blasio, said the cases included a "handful" of students but that "the vast majority were among the staff before schools reopened to students".

Some public health experts said the statistics reflect a new reality.

With face-to-face learning taking place in a system of 1.1 million school children, 75,000 teachers, 2,500 school buildings, and early childhood centers, new cases are most likely to arise on a daily basis. Individual building closings are also common, it said.

Dr. Michael Mina, Assistant Professor of Epidemiology at Harvard T.H. The Chan School of Public Health said families in New York should be prepared for a constant whac-a-mole game. The virus will likely reappear repeatedly in school buildings until there is either a vaccine or very frequent testing, he said.

Ideally, according to Dr. Mina 50 percent of all students and employees are tested three times a week.
