In this month of black history, as the nation takes the time to recognize the achievements of popular civil rights activists like Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr., I think of a lesser-known figure: Rebecca Lee Crumpler, M.D.

Crumpler became the first African American female doctor in 1864 – just as the Civil War was ending and the journey of health care for blacks in America may only be just beginning.

Her textbook, A Book of Medical Discourses, provides insight into her determination to advocate health care for women and children, as well as her urge to document the complexities and multifactorial aspects of the disease.
