Let's start with a condition usually associated with chiropractic care: lower back pain. If you are in pain on any level, especially in the lower lumbar region (as my friend's family member did), chiropractic care can help tremendously.
While many medications can block pain, chiropractic care is about getting to the cause safely and effectively. A randomized, double-blind, controlled clinical trial evaluated pain levels in patients with lower back problems before and after a lumbar fit. Each pain indicator improved for the treatment group.
However, wherever someone is in pain, it can be very debilitating. Occasionally, a patient may envision booking more chiropractic visits to better or faster resolve the condition. In my experience, it is very rare that just one or two adjustments to a long-standing or new problem will provide complete relief.
As in any area of health and wellbeing, balance is key. Too much healthy food can become unhealthy. Megadosing certain nutrients can be as problematic as not getting enough. Likewise, chiropractic is not necessarily an "more is better" intervention, as any skilled chiropractor will tell his patient.
Chiropractic offers people something hopeful and useful that they can turn to again and again. Especially for people who are disappointed with conventional health care, chiropractic care can be a natural and effective way to relieve pain and support good function.
However, there is a huge difference between addiction and awareness. In this context, the term "addicted" suggests using something habitually and developing an addiction even when it may no longer be needed. (As a practitioner, I don't want that to be the result.)
Awareness, on the other hand, refers to knowing that there are options out of scope. From there, you need to communicate clearly with your chiropractor, discuss a care plan that will best benefit you, and determine the best long-term strategy for your condition and goals. It is a good thing to be aware that chiropractic is an option for you – and that doesn't mean you will be amazed by it forever.
