Metabolic surgeries such as gastric bypass and gastric cuff surgery are not only effective in treating type 2 diabetes and obesity. According to a new study by Erik Stenberg of Örebro University, published September 15 in PLOS Medicine, the surgery also has benefits for people with obesity and high blood pressure – and can reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke and death.

High blood pressure, especially in combination with morbid obesity, is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. Metabolic surgery has been shown to reduce the risk of many conditions typically associated with obesity, such as type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, and sleep apnea. However, it was unclear whether surgery would also be effective for treating high blood pressure. To evaluate whether metabolic surgery has benefits for patients with obesity and high blood pressure, the researchers compared two groups of people with these conditions: one who had undergone metabolic surgery and a control group who had not. Individuals in the groups were compared by age, gender, and location, and the researchers considered additional factors such as other health conditions and educational levels. The group that had undergone metabolic surgery had a lower risk of a "major adverse cardiovascular event" such as stroke, heart attack, or cardiac arrest and a lower risk of dying from any cause. Overall, 3.2% of the operated group had a serious adverse cardiovascular event compared to 4.5% of the control group.

The new study suggests that metabolic surgery is effective in treating high blood pressure in people with a BMI of 35 kg / m 2. Metabolic surgery may not be a global solution to the obesity epidemic, but with these related conditions causing so much death and disease worldwide, surgery should be considered an effective option for treating obesity and high blood pressure patients.

The study shows metabolic surgery associated with a lower risk of death and cardiac complications
