In 1978, college students attending the University of California's Berkeley campus decided that Valentine's Day had to go, and condom day, or more specifically, condom week, should take its place. In the following years February became the National Condom Month. The point: promoting safe sex through educational events to raise awareness and prevent sexually transmitted diseases.
