What Women Over 40 With Great Sex Lives Have In Common

What midlife and sexual stories must be challenged if we are to be sexually awakened? What could be a healthier way of looking at the same situation, given that these stories are harmful or not true?

Let me give you an example of how that worked for me. In my early 40s, life felt like I was on a one-way conveyor belt that was largely out of my control. I was driven by a list of things to do. Financial planners told me how much money I had to make and save to live 95, send my kids to an average of six years of private school, and make my made up life look perfect on the outside. We forecast the rise and fall of the stock market for the next 50 years. Every morning I got up and did what I was supposed to do. I've made a lot of money, won a lot of awards, and made things seem amazing on Facebook.

My then-husband and I had complex wills, life insurance policies, disability policies, and every other imaginable tool to create the illusion that we had this life figured out and under control. I knew the exact date I would retire and the date we would sell our house. I knew when our children would get married, how much their weddings would cost, when I would become grandparents, and when each of us would likely die. Nothing was unknown.

If the goal of all of this planning and attempting to manipulate the future was to instill a sense of security, why did the idea of getting old fill me with fear? Why did it feel like I was buried in an early grave when following this beautifully landscaped trail? The fact was, I couldn't look forward to anything. There wasn't anything exciting or surprising to expect. Life had been carefully packed and stuffed into a box. Looking into the future felt like looking down a long, dark, narrowing tunnel. It was a death march.

At the same time, I had problems getting older. I got crow's feet. Gray hairs became too much to pull out. My sex drive wasn't there. Women much younger than me enjoyed leadership roles and awards, and featured prominently in the media. I could feel myself slowly being pushed out of the picture of what mattered.
