7 qualities of people with high emotional intelligence

At least, says Daniel Goleman, Ph.D., a noted leadership writer and researcher who wrote the bestselling book, Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Mean More Than IQ. Goleman has dedicated his work to finding out what makes people successful. And his title spoils the surprise and he says that their emotional intelligence matters. This is what drives a person to excellence.

What exactly is Emotional Intelligence (EI)? Psychology Today says it is:

  • The ability to accurately identify your own emotions as well as those of others
  • The ability to use emotions and apply them to tasks such as thinking and problem solving
  • The ability to deal with emotions, including being in control of your own, as well as the ability to cheer or calm another person

The concept of emotional intelligence has been around since 1990 when Yale psychologists John D. Mayer and Peter Salovey introduced the concept to the academic world. But Goleman looked into it further – and he found a direct relationship between the EI of a company's employees and the company's success:

Employees with a high EI level have a self-confidence that helps them understand employees and meet deadlines. When people have a high EI, they won't be bothered by customer criticism. You will continue to focus on the results instead of feeling offended. If two applicants have similar IQs, the one with the higher EI is likely to be a better fit for the company. As Goleman said, no amount of intelligence will make up for the lack of always important emotional and social skills, especially as part of the professional world. Not sure how to identify this essential trait? Here are seven characteristics of emotionally intelligent people:

1. They are change agents. People with a high EI are not afraid of change. They understand that this is a necessary part of life – and they adapt.

2. You are self aware. They know what they can do and what they still have to learn – weaknesses do not hold them back. They know which environments are best for their work style.

3. You are empathetic. EI's hallmark of being able to relate to others makes them indispensable in the workplace. With the innate ability to understand what employees or customers are going through, they can get through difficult times without drama.

4. They are not perfectionists. People with EI are extremely motivated, but know that perfection is impossible. You roll with the strokes and learn from mistakes.

5. You are balanced. Their self-esteem means that they naturally know how important and how they can maintain a healthy professional and personal balance in their life. They eat well, get a lot of sleep, and have interests outside of work.

6. You are curious. An innate feeling of wonder and curiosity makes them comfortable to be around. You don't judge. You explore the possibilities. You ask questions and are open to new solutions.

7. You are gracious. People with a high EI know that every day brings something to be thankful for – and they don't see the world as “half empty” as many people do. They feel good about their life and do not allow themselves to be influenced by critics or toxic people.
