Tips on how to Register for the 2022 Escape From Alcatraz Triathlon

Some races are known for their iconic landscapes while others are known for their particularly challenging routes. Both of the best, and that’s exactly what you get at the Escape From Alcatraz Triathlon. In its 41st year, the iconic race will take place in San Francisco on June 5, 2022, and will take triathletes from the famous Alcatraz Island – the former prison that once housed Al Capone – over a scenic (and hilly) course throughout City. Looking for a festival tent race next summer? That’s it. And now you have the best chance of being selected: You can register for the random drawing of the race from September 14th.

The iconic race is open to 2,000 participants, almost all of whom are randomly selected (over 10,000 athletes compete in any given year). If you’re one of those lucky winners, there is something for yourself – or maybe a better word is torture. The race begins by jumping off a ferry into San Francisco Bay, then swimming 1.5 miles from Alcatraz Island to the shore of Marina Green (this is also the best spot for spectators to see the action) .

Then the triathletes saddle up for an 18-mile bike ride through the twisting streets of the Presidio, finishing with a 13-kilometer trail run to Baker Beach and back. The trail run part includes an additional surprise: a detour to the “sand ladder”, a steep staircase with over 200 steps. It’s a grueling challenge – no wonder the Escape From Alcatraz Triathlon attracts Olympians, world champions, and top athletes from around the world every year.

Sounds like an ideal weekend? Don’t miss your opportunity to be a part of the 2022 event. The random drawing is your best chance of getting a seat, and better yet, it’s free to enter. Registration opens on September 14th and will remain open until October 20, 2021 at 11:59 p.m. PST. Please visit the Escape From Alcatraz website for more information on the race and how to participate.
