6 Ways To Cure Tiredness

6 ways to cure fatigue

1. Move more:: It doesn't have to mean going to the gym or running for miles. Research has shown that just taking a brisk walk a day can noticeably improve our energy levels. It can be so difficult to find motivation to exercise when you are feeling exhausted, but you can start with just 10 minutes a day. Then increase it by 5 minutes each week and by then you will feel better that you actually want to move. Make a diagram on your wall and write down the days you got off and see how you feel better – it really works. Winter is an especially important time to keep moving as it boosts our immune systems to fight colds and flu.

2. Sleep better:: Sounds obvious doesn't it? Sleep is supposed to help us regenerate our body and mind: Virtually every system in our body pays the price if we don't get the right amount or quality of sleep that we need. However, you will be surprised how many people sleep poorly, especially when these sleep-stealing screens are introduced into our bedrooms (research has shown that light from screens interferes with good quality sleep). Poor sleep can also lead to a thicker waistline, as we produce a hormone called ghrelin when we are deprived of sleep. This hormone makes us hungrier and less satisfied with small portions. Avoid caffeine in the afternoon, take an Epsom salt bath, and take magnesium and B vitamins, as well as acupuncture. However, if you're still having problems, contact your GP to discuss other options.

3. Break your sugar addiction:: Sugar gives us a false "high" followed by a drop in blood sugar and energy levels. Sugar also reduces a thing called "orexin" in our brain, which makes us feel shabby and tired. Unfortunately, sugar is in everything these days and the problem is that it's often hidden. It lurks in processed foods, breads, yogurt, and cooking sauces, to name a few. Unlike vitamins, minerals, and proteins, we don't even need small amounts of sugar to survive, but we crave it. MRI scans were done immediately after consuming sugar, which shows that sugar activates our brain in a similar way to cocaine. The simple answer? Cut it out. Wean yourself off it over the course of 3-5 days and you will feel the benefits. A good place to start is with your food diary. Monitor your blood sugar by eating a good combination of proteins and vegetables every 3-4 hours to avoid food cravings.

4. Get yourself (properly) hydrated:: Some general practitioners believe that half of the people who come to them because of fatigue are actually dehydrated. In fact, we know that humans can survive almost three weeks without food but can only endure days without water. This should indicate how important water is to our survival, but unfortunately many of us neglect our water intake, leading to symptoms like fatigue. When you are dehydrated, your blood pressure may drop, which reduces blood flow to the brain and makes you feel sleepier and more tired. Did you also know that dehydration can affect melatonin, the sleep hormone? If you are chronically dehydrated, it can also gradually reduce the levels of essential amino acids needed to make melatonin, affect your circadian rhythm, and make it difficult for you to fall asleep.

5. Keep a food diary:: Keeping a food diary is one of the best ways to not only help you lose weight, but also to monitor your diet for low-energy foods. The key is to eat iron-rich protein foods (women in particular are prone to iron deficiency (anemia), which can cause fatigue) such as lean red meat, eggs, and fish. Make sure your diet is high in vegetables too (many of us only consume 1 or 2 servings a day when some experts think it should be closer to 10 a day). If you're struggling to get enough of them, try making soup every other day and experimenting with other vegetables (try our homemade minestrone soup). Or try a green smoothie. Other ideas include adding vegetables to homemade pasta sauces, spinach for breakfast, or making kale chips to nibble on while watching a movie.

6. Slow down: Stress is the cause of a lot of fatigue these days and can be the result of too much physical exertion (kids running around or being out at work all the time) like mental stress (trying to stay too) a lot of balls in Air or worrying incessantly). The answer is to slow down. The reality is that many of us juggle work, endless chores, places, and errands. Complement that with our unhealthy attachment to our smartphones and emails and it's a recipe for overwhelming mental fatigue.
