The following podcast was unplanned and when it happened we had a cracker. A very big thank you to Rosin Redmond for sharing her story.
To give some context to Roisin's "My Son's 6 Stone Weight Loss Journey" podcast. Eoghan, Roisin's son, lost 6 stones in the Adolescent Weight Loss program at the Motivation Weight Management Clinic in Swords. Eoghan took pen and paper and wrote to our clinic director Aisling Connolly. Eoghan wanted to help other teenagers struggling with their weight, just as he has for many years. A podcast was a natural outcome, and you can check out our Eoghan podcast, "The Teenagers 6 Stone Weight Loss Journey" here.
Roisin had accompanied Eoghan on the podcast recording and when she was there it seemed like a great idea to give her the opportunity to tell the story from her perspective.
Roisin's story is all too familiar: a general health system that is ill-equipped to deal with overweight and obesity among teenagers and, as a result, is failing them, and especially their son. The purpose of this blog post is not to address the underlying conditions that lead to being overweight and obese. What's the point You are probably reading this because you passed this phase and your son / daughter has a BMI that puts them in the obese / morbidly obese category. You need solutions to the problem, not the causes.
There is no doubt that the successive locks have had a negative impact on the general metabolism of teenagers. Many of their athletic and social facilities are deprived and it is obvious that they are less active. For many, the obesity likely existed before locking, but now it needs to be addressed.
As we pointed out in the blog post accompanying Eoghan's podcast, you are not alone. There are many other parents in Ireland who are stressed out about the same issue. When weight gain is handled in a controlled and safe environment like the one we provide, weight loss will be facilitated quickly and efficiently. Eoghan lost 6 stones with motivation.
Both Roisin and Eoghan recognize the importance of the weight loss of 6 stones and are not lost on either. To Rosin, a mother and a loving one, she takes great pride in her son's accomplishment, but reminds us that the reason Eoghan was successful is because he wanted it. A mother's love and determination counts little if her child is not engaged. Sometimes a lack of commitment can be misinterpreted because the teen is unable to fully articulate their feelings.
At Motivation, we offer an adolescent and teenage weight loss program that has helped many young people like Eoghan lose weight and reconnect with society on their terms.
"My Stone's 6 Stone Weight Loss Journey" is a great podcast and should prove to be a valuable resource for any parent looking for information on how to manage teenage weight gain.
