Enjoy your clothes now, not tomorrow
Many people working to lose weight delay satisfaction when it comes to the way they look and feel in their clothes. They forget that they deserve to feel great now, not just at the end of their journey when they reach their destination.
I myself remember that when I was carrying extra weight, I wore baggy clothes and tied sweaters around my waist to hide my bum. I just felt bad about how I looked. If I knew what I know now, I would have tried harder – not for others, but for myself! If I had looked in the mirror and had been happier with what I saw – regardless of size – I might have had higher self-esteem, which in turn would have prevented a lot of overeating when I was feeling bad.
That's why we've put together this quick guide on how to dress slimmer for your shape now, no matter how far you have to go. Even if you've lost just two pounds, this is a wonderful start, and it's important to signal to yourself that you deserve to dress well and be comfortable in your clothes, not in the future, but right here today.
A few simple tricks can help you achieve the most flattering look that will make you feel better right away. And so often in life when we feel better, we make better decisions that you can benefit from in the long run.
We urge you to try our tips – and treat yourself to something new this month. You really deserve it, especially if you work hard on your healthy eating and exercise goals. And don't forget to stand tall, stick your chest out and be proud of who you are – just as you are today!
For the men
For small patterns go: Many people think solid-colored fabrics in solid colors are the way to go, but often it is actually small, textured patterns on knitwear and shirts with fine, subtle designs that catch the eye and distract it from bigger issues. Pinstripe suits are also particularly slim. However, be sure to avoid large, noisy prints.
Go deeper: If you have a pot belly, high button jackets can sometimes accentuate it, as can double-breasted suits. What you want is to maximize the triangle of the shirt over the top bottom. So opt for suit jackets that allow this, and V-necks instead of round necks.
Avoid baggy clothing: It's tempting to hide behind a baggy suit, but it actually only makes you appear taller. Fitted clothing will provide a slimmer silhouette, but don't go overboard – make sure you can comfortably place a thumb under your waistband without breathing, and don't buy jackets or shirts that are uncomfortably tight on your back.
Neutral colors: Keep your color palette pretty dark and neutral. You can't go wrong with black when you're on the bigger side. Another great tip is to minimize the color contrast between the top and bottom of your body. Try to keep them in sync to look leaner.
Slim fabrics: Thicker fabrics like cord pants or chunky cardigans may look appealing at this time of year, but they will add bulk to your frame. Choose lighter layered knitwear, like a merino wool cardigan or fine kint, and stick with chinos, which look more flattering than bulkier fabrics.
For the ladies
Wear the correct underwear: A professional bra fitter can determine if, like most women, you are wearing the wrong cup or back size that does not lift or sculpt. Likewise, underwear that is too tight will cause bulges, while straps or G-strings (if you don't find them too uncomfortable) or seamless, low-profile hipster undergarments provide a much smoother line. Shaping underwear options, while not for everyone, are now made from such a fantastic fabric that offers great tummy control and can smooth the look of thighs under pencil skirts or dresses.
Choose the right jacket: The clean, straight lines and narrow lapels of a good blazer do wonders for counteracting excessive curves. Wear it open over a V-neckline and dark washed jeans for extra effect. Jackets that taper at the waist also work wonderfully for shrinking the waistline and look great on most frames – who cares what the size says on the label!
Use jewelry strategically: Long necklaces add length to a short neck and draw attention from the hips to the front and center of the body. Large statement necklaces require more attention to be paid to the face than anywhere else, and a statement piece will attract compliments. Likewise, sparkling cuffs, stacked bangles, and cocktail rings draw the eyes to the wrists rather than the upper arms.
Choose the right denim: The slimmest are dark straight leg or boot cut jeans that sit on your hips (as opposed to your waist or below your hipbone). In terms of length, go for the ones that cover your instep while wearing heels – an extended trick most celebs use – and check out how many of them are wearing dark heeled jeans!
Go for a spray tan and up-do: Not for all year round but a great option if you are going to a wedding or event. Most ladies agree that a tan (whether fake or real) makes us feel slimmer and gives a longer, slimmer look to the legs and legs. In terms of hairstyles, it helps to pull the curls up into a ponytail high at the back of the head and then tease the crown slightly to highlight the bone structure and make the face appear slimmer.
And remember, if you eat healthily (think of salmon with lots of green vegetables, for example), sleep well, drink plenty of water (either cold or herbal tea), and exercise, you actually feel healthier.
You also have a sparkle in your eye and a fresher complexion – something money just can't buy.
