The Link Between Stress And Weight Loss

What is stress

When considering whether there is a link between stress and weight loss, it is important to first understand what stress is and how it affects you. Stress is a very common word that many of us use on a daily basis. It's a feeling that arises under pressure. Anything that poses a challenge or threat to our wellbeing is stress.

Stress is an inevitable part of life. Modern life is full of problems, deadlines, frustrations and demands. Stress isn't always bad. In small doses, it can help you work under pressure and motivate you to do your best. Without stress, life would be boring and likely feel pointless. However, when stress undermines our physical and mental health, it becomes a problem. This happens when you feel unable to deal with it due to mental or emotional pressure.

There are 4 levels of stress.


A person is faced with a stressor that:

PHYSICAL like lack of sleep, long distance running or infection or

PSYCHOLOGICAL like the fear of being late for an important meeting or the fear of financial loss.

Throughout human history, stressors have been mainly physical in nature: the struggle for survival, enough food, etc. While nowadays they are mainly psychological in nature and are the result of negative emotions such as insecurity or anger.


The body automatically produces STRESS HORMONES known as adrenaline, noradrenaline (noradrenaline) and cortisol through the adrenal glands.


These hormones release a tremendous amount of energy.


Two things can happen.

1. It can be expelled: stress decreases the quality of the blood that flows to the brain and increases the movement of blood to the muscles. Just think how easy it is to lose your keys when you are under pressure to get somewhere quick! This stress response is how humans have survived for centuries as it enabled them to be stronger, to fight, and to run away from danger quickly.


2. It can stay with you: then it attacks the immune system, weakens the body and makes us susceptible to disease.
Then everything is affected. How you feel, how you think, how you act and how your body works. The most common physical symptoms are changes in sleep patterns, eating habits, sweating, and difficulty concentrating. Some people smoke or drink more to ease the feeling of being overwhelmed.


As explained above, your body reacts in the same way to all stress. Every time you have a stressful day, your brain tells your cells to release these potent ones STRESS HORMONES. You get a rush of adrenaline that releases stored energy so you can fight or flee. At the same time, you get a surge in cortisol, which prompts your body to replenish this energy even though you haven't used up many calories.

That can do you VERY HUNGRY. And your body pumps cortisol for as long as the stress continues. Unfortunately, in these situations, we don't crave healthy eating. Instead, we crave salty, sweet, and high-fat foods because they stimulate the brain to release ENJOYMENT CHEMICALS that reduces the tension. This calming effect is addicting so every time you are scared you will want to fatten food.

When the adrenal glands pump out Cortisol This slows down the production of TESTOSTERONE (Muscle building hormone) Your muscle mass will decrease over time, so you will burn fewer calories. Cortisol also encourages your body to store fat in particular VISCERAL FAT (Fat in the middle), which is especially dangerous because it surrounds vital organs and releases fatty acids into the bloodstream, which increases cholesterol and insulin levels, leading to coronary artery disease and diabetes.

As you can see, there is a strong link between stress and weight management. Become aware of your stress triggers and learn to defeat them.
