Visualizing effective weight loss is the main theme of Motivate Me this week.
I was parked outside a charity shop earlier this week. While waiting for one of my girls, I just looked at the contents of the window and there was a neatly arranged Russian doll set or Maytroshka dolls in front of me to give it its official name.
30 minutes earlier, I had just had a challenging session with a new client who was really struggling. She struggled with the fact that she had reasons that made her overweight. It was more than just overeating. She was in denial.
Linked to this was their fear of failure. She confided in me that she has been dieting for 20 years and felt that motivation was her "last chance".
With their Mental Weight report, we focused on one problem that we would solve in this session. There were several underlying factors, but we both agreed. I assured her that if we peeled off the layers and focused on one attitude / behavior, we would see significant improvement in a short time. Your acceptance of this approach was a milestone.
We have agreed on an action plan – one topic at a time. That monkey, no longer in denial, was gone from her back.
I often find the fear of failure a common problem that holds many customers together. As I've said for years, this fear of failure is understandable, but wrong. You have failed, you have not failed all of these previous diet programs. I spent a lot of time on this point because 20 years of effort and hard work cannot be turned away. It was important to show that if these diet programs did not address habits, behaviors, and attitudes, they would always provide short-term rest.
While unpacking the Russian dolls, I imagined both of the above problems.
In order to get to the next doll, one must first deal with the habit, behavior and attitude that cause the most problems.
Likewise, for fear of failure, once you have learned to accept that the previous diet mistakes were not your fault, you can lift this doll up and move on to the next stage of your weight loss journey.
Weight loss and weight maintenance are not linear – it is different for each individual customer. However, the approach is the same: you can't get to the last doll without unpacking all of the others.
That last doll; Of course, it's lighter and smaller so it resembles real weight loss, but you changed so much to get there. You have turned all of these bad habits, behaviors, and attitudes upside down. The net result is a lighter and happier person.
My job for you this weekend – take a few minutes in a quiet place, close your eyes and visualize the Maytroshka dolls.

Stand up (see here for more on the benefits of standing), inhale, hold and exhale and repeat for a minute. Feel the positive energy.
Be positive. Be strong.
Visualizing effective weight loss will raise many questions, but it is your approach to understanding these habits, behaviors, and attitudes that are key to permanent weight loss.
