What Is A Weight Loss Plateau And How To Deal With Blocks

This podcast looks at what we call the weight loss plateau, the reasons behind it, and some of the tools that will help us deal with it and move forward successfully.

What is a Weight Loss Plateau?

A weight loss plateau is where you lose weight and then it stops for some unknown reason. According to the Oxford Englsih-Disctionary, plateau (out) means to remain at a constant level after a period of growth or progress. In this case, your progress would be the weekly steady weight loss until you hit a plateau.

Plateaus are a normal part of the weight loss process. Generally, when we look at the clients' weight loss graph, it's not linear, but incremental – weight loss, weight loss, weight plateau. This is normal, but of course for some people this plateau can be frustrating where, despite your best efforts, there is no weight loss that week.

What's happening?

  1. First of all, don't panic. Trust that this plateau will pass and you will continue to lose weight. Because it will pass.
  2. Turn things on. Open your Motivation Food Guide and check out the wide variety of foods that you can add to your weight loss. Try new vegetables. You can find new recipes on the Motivation website or in the mobile app. Change is the key. Try new sources of protein. You may get most of your protein from meat and chicken. Try fish or plant-based proteins. We know that when Pope changes his diet, it also tends to increase metabolism.
  3. Shake up your routine in terms of exercise. It is not necessary to exercise to lose weight, but doing so will greatly improve your weight loss results.
  4. Do you keep track of things with your food diary? If you don't keep track of your intake, the calories can easily go back up and undermine your weight loss efforts. We can't emphasize the importance of keeping your food diary. Those who do are 50% more likely to lose weight and maintain that weight loss.
  5. Complacency is a common occurrence – "I know everything and I'm fine". Take the opportunity to return to the clinic, weigh up, and fuel your excitement with the help of your weight loss advisor.
  6. Check Your Fiber Intake! Variety is important, so add to the range of vegetables you eat.
  7. Reduce salt. We advocate an unprocessed diet, but recognize that due to time constraints, people occasionally have to choose for processed foods. If so, pay special attention here as foods high in salt can lead to water retention which can act as a foil for your weight loss efforts.
  8. Do you drink enough water? A bad day for a customer may be a glass or water or none at all. Overlook water intake and it will adversely affect your weight loss efforts. Dehydration leads to fatigue and you won't be as motivated to exercise. Besides, we don't know why. However, when you are hydrated, your metabolism is triggered at a higher rate of calorie burning.
  9. Are you overwhelmed or stressed? This can happen during a plateau and the negative voice can sneak in again. You can spend a few days becoming aware of your negative thoughts or perfectionist ways of thinking.
  10. Try to jot them down in your daily journal and you will be surprised how often they come up. Your audio program files are important here. Reconnect with your weight loss advisor as soon as possible and they will help you resolve this issue.

If you've completely fallen off the cart, don't set excessive or unrealistic goals.

Don't say you will be going to the gym five days a week.

Start small and build on that. Commit to small changes and celebrate each one along the way. All of these successes add up.
